Weill Theater - Sheboygan, WI
I had arrived at the theater with plenty of time to spare and found my seat in the front row, left aisle....about 3 feet in front of the speaker. Probably did lots of damage to my ears....but what done is done! :)
The first thing I noticed when I got there was that there were two drum kits on stage. Kenny’s big kit in back and a smaller kit in the middle of the stage. I hadn’t heard about any openers and after taking a closer look, decided that there was probably going to be two sets with the BoDeans acting as their own opener. Which they did.
The guys came out just after 7:30 and I immediately stand up. Other than the last few people finding their seats, I was the only...yes ONLY one standing as far as I could see. A few songs later a few small groups of 2-3 people throughout the theater would get up. But as soon as a slower song started they would all sit back down leaving me standing all alone again.
For the first set Kenny was sitting in the center of the stage at a small drum kit and Eric was sitting on a stool right in front of Kenny’s larger drum kit in the back but after a few songs he stood up in his normal spot between the drum kit and the keyboards.
Ok, setlist time:
1. Ultimately Fine - oh my gosh did it rock! So much fun, had a very ‘country/rock’ feel to it. Like I said before, I was the only one standing and dancing...how everyone could sit still for this is a true mystery to me.
2. Heart of a Miracle - I couldn’t help but hear in my head the line “Doctor” in the beginning just like in the Barrymore 2003 boot! LOL! (I think I’ve been listening to that disc too much lately!) I didn't notice at first, but there was at least twice where Sam mixed in "heart of America" rather than "miracle"
3. Idaho - Just before the song started, Kurt said something like “We’re the Jed Stone Cowboys and we’re opening for the BoDeans” I laughed and clapped then Kurt looks over at me and says “No, really”. :) Sometime during Idaho a few other people joined me in standing/dancing. It was good to see I wasn’t the only wanting to rock that night!
4. Makes U
5. Dreams - awesome as always, absolutely love that beat even with Kenny on the mini drum kit
6. Misery - in the middle of the song an usher makes his way across the front row telling everyone to sit down. That lasted for about 10 seconds before the song was over and we stood back up. At the same time Sam says “Let the people stand, they paid good money”
7. Sad Eyes - Sam’s comment after the song “Smooth as silk”
8. Stay On - I'm finally joined a fellow BoDiva who was running late and we proceed to have a great time sing and dancing the rest of the evening.
9. Good Work - bluesy as ever and I was just lovin' it!
---30 minute break---
10. Fadeaway w/Bed’s Too Big - again, awesome as always, this time almost the entire theater got to their feet while Kurt was playing this incredible intro. Oh and what a treat to hear Kurt sing Bed’s Too Big” again! Now...if they could fit that in there AND have Kenny playing on Sam’s guitar....that would be the perfect mix!
11. Nobody Loves Me - no Sammy dance....don’t think he would have heard me all the way across the stage even if I had screamed out “Dance Sammy dance!”
12. Texas Ride Song - too much fun just like every other show before this and hopefully every other shows after this!
13. Still The Night - Kurt intros it much like he did in Appleton saying that he had been working on a tape with a chorus but didn’t have any verses. And that Sam “stole” it from his bedroom. Kurt keeps talking and Sam turns to him and says “Stole? Stole? I just wanted to help ya!” Later in the song Kurt and Sam came way over to the left side of the stage just in front of the speakers near us. Then Sam looks at the speakers, then looks at us mouthing the words “Holy cow it’s loud!” - you got that right Sam!
14. Runaway w/Del Shannon intro
15. You Don't Get Much- after the song Sam says “I think I wet myself.....speaking of wetting myself, I was caught in the rainstorm in Canada. I think this song was the only good thing that came out of it.” then they went into.....
16. True Devotion
17. Jenny Rae - that awesome slow, sexy, into all out rock version that I love. Too bad almost the entire theater was sitting again. Sam’s comment after the song “Kurt Robert Neumann, the Texas Cowboy” :)
18. Naked - Sam says “everyone always requests this one, don’t know why”
19. Feed The Fire w/Slow Ride, Don’t Cha - very cool to have that Pussycat Doll's snippet in there, too bad it was gone by the following night though.
20. Closer to Free - Bukka came over towards the left side of the stage and I could have sworn he knodded at me. A few minutes later Eric comes over near the left side and sends a big smile our way.
---encore---
21. Only Love - TFA - unbelieveable every time I see it. When Sam asked us to sit he put it this way “make that usher’s night...sit down and be quiet”
22. I’m In Trouble Again w/Stolen Car - beautiful, just plain beautiful. The way Sam sings Stolen Car makes me weak in the knees!
23. Good Things - the full blown rocker that we all love! After the song, Kenny walks off stage and shot at us with his “hand pistols” :)
Awesome show in my opinion. Beautiful theater complete with a stary ceiling, the sound was awesome, especially during Only Love. From where I was sitting, you could hear their voices echoing throughout the theater. Just a very cool moment in a great show.
