Friday December 30, 2005 Fine Line Music Cafe - Minneapolis, MN Opener: Susie Suh
We arrived at the venue about 6:17 (no, really it was 6:17) and we were thrilled to be able to see and hear the sound check that was already underway from our location just inside the entrance way of the venue. They were playing Nobody Loves Me, and Eric waved at us from the stage before they went into Idaho. They began what I originally thought was Good Work but I believe they threw in a verse/chorus of Land of 1,000 Dances although others might disagree with me but that was what I wrote in my little red notebook. And then they played on for a long time without any vocals at all. Lastly they played Misery before heading off stage.
The two hours in line flew by with such good company. While we were waiting in line, Susie Suh arrived threw the front doors and immediately recognized some of us from the night before. She informed us this was her last night with the BoDeans but was glad to see us at another show. Once doors opened we headed right for the stage which was a small little thing in the back corner and was only about 3 feet tall. I believe our group of friends had the entire front row covered and quite a bit of the second row as well! Too much fun to be surrounded by such a great group of friends and to be able to enjoy such an unbelieveable show with people that enjoy it as much as you do!
Susie Suh did a wonderful job opening again and this time much more of the crowd paid attention and gave her the respect she deserved. She again mentioned that she was in Madison the night before and that she recognized some of us from the night before. She also mentioned that she was more scared on the snowy drive earlier in the day than she was performing on stage. :)
Before long, the guys came out and looked like they were ready to rock. It ended up being such a silly night on stage with lots of stage banter and laughs on stage, and jokes ongoing between multiple songs. Also lots of silliness between a certain fan in the crowd and Kenny & Sam.
Setlist:
1. Ultimately Fine - Kurt said something like "you ready to get hot" - as if he knew it was going to be hot, hot night in there. Either way, he was very right about that one!
2. Heart of a Miracle - I was enjoying myself so much that I forgot to notice whether or not it was Miracle or America. I'm told that at one point Kurt was strumming away facing Sam and it looked like he was mouthing the words "Sex, drugs, rock & roll...sex, drugs, rock & roll"
3. Idaho - in the middle of the song, the two smoke machines above the band started up and gave out two great big clouds of smoke that came floating down over the band. We all saw it coming but the moment it got to Kurt he looked back as if to say 'wtf?'.
4. Makes U
5. Brand New
6. Stay On
7. Fadeaway - one of them says 'this is the warm-up song" - believe me....we were definitely warm by then! Andy mimics "stabbing knife" into my shoulder. :)
8. Texas Ride Song - we jump like you wouldn't believe
9. Still The Night - we sing as loud as can be. Sam throws in the line from Wild Thing,..."you make my heart sing....groovy". Sam was also banging on the cymbal again with his guitar.
10. Runaway with Del Shannon intro - In the middle of the song, Sam was standing way over on the left hand of the stage and in the process had gotten his cord caught under one of Kurt's petals. On his way back he tries to get it unhooked and I think in the process had turned off Kurt's guitar. Kurt was just shaking his head at Sam and once Sam got back to his mic he says "Who needs you anyway!"
11. You Don't Get Much - unbelieveable as always. I've been lucky to have seen Kenny play this so many times, but each and every time it just blows me away. Again Kurt strummed Sam's guitar once while they were facing each other center stage.
12. Jenny Rae - love it! Out of all the different versions of Jenny Rae that we have heard over the years, this one is definitely my favorite! Sam introduces Kurt as "Kurt Robert Neumann, the cowboy" for like the third night in a row, but adds..."where are your boots cowboy?" Kurt must have made a pouty face or something because Sam then says " I'm sorry...I love ya" to Kurt.
13. Naked w/Rickshaw Riding - Sam says "back by popular demand". After the 3-4 lines, the crowd was singing so loud that Sam says "damn, you sing it" and then let us continue by ourselves for the next line or two. The Rickshaw Riding snippit was present once again and later in the song, Kenny was making kissy faces at Sam. Too funny!
14. Closer To Free - For the first time in all my shows this year, I saw Kenny noticeably screw up! He completely missed going from the quieter section when they always introduce everyone, back into the rocker that it always is. Guess he was distracted by all that attention he was getting during the previous song! :) Either way, when it happened everyone on stage immediately turned towards Kenny and from then on all the guys were half laughing through the rest of the song!
---encore---
15. Snow is Falling - when they came out, Kenny started what sounded like Nobody Love Me, Then it almost sounded like they were going to start 617 but instead Kurt was talking about the weather with all the snow Minneapolis got that day and then starts goofing off singing and playing this little ditty about 'snow is falling, snow is falling....' After about a min of that he stops and says. "I just wrote that. A Fine Line original" Absolutely hilarious. then Sam says "And I just wrote this" as they start going into.....
16. Misery - Sam jokes about a girl calling up Bukka and saying that she's leaving him for a singer....a singing, guitar player" :)
17. Good Work - the awesome rocker once again and we absolutely went nuts! It also included a bit of Batman once again too!
18. Nobody Loves Me - This was suppose to be a second encore, but Sam says that they're just going to hang out there for a while rather than actually leaving the stage.
19. Good Things - at the very end when normally we jump ourselves silly, Kurt turns to Eric and Sam and says.."jump!" Eric and Sam look at him like he's crazy since everyone was so hot and tired, but Kurt repeats himself "JUMP!" again and then they all start jumping although neither one of them jumps for as long as Kurt did.
Everyone seemed to be having a great time and singing just as loud as the night before. It very quickly turned into a sweat-fest as it was so hot in there with the occasional cold breeze from an exit door that was opened every once in a while.
This show was so unbelieveably awesome in every aspect, that I just have to quote a good friend on this one......"Best f'ing show ever!"
