Review/Setlist

Fox Theater - Boulder, CO
Opener: The Trampolines

When we booked this trip we knew it was going to be a good weekend. A Gufs cd release show, two BoDeans shows, and Kenny & Noah drumming together. But little did we know that this would end up being one of the best roadtrips ever!

Some of us left a day early in order to catch The Gufs in Chicago on Thursday night. Great show, the new disc rocks, and Goran (lead singer) sent a message with us to tell Sam that he should smile more. And in the spirit of dimples....I agree. :)

We thought of all the BoDivas when we had dinner at this little place across from the Double Door. On the menu it said: "Jell-O Shots - Who knows what liquor or what jell-o flavor. Who cares it's $1" So we ordered two each and the waitress replies "really?" Just so you know, they were the hard plastic cups, so certain people will want to say clear of that place. :)

Flying out was uneventful for us, but Kenny's Bitch had a *very* familiar face on her flight. Funny that out of all the flights going to Denver that day, Kenny just happened to be on hers! I guess, what do you expect, she is a rockstar, ya know!

Friday night's show was a lot fun. We arrived early, took our usual spots up front. Some a little to the right, some a little to the left and some of us just prefer to keep in the middle of the road. And did just that.

Everyone was very anxious to see Kenny play, and even more so to see Kenny AND Noah play. We walked up to the stage and discovered Bukka's setup way to one side, Eric's setup way to the other side, Noah's kit right behind Kurt, Kenny's kit behind Sam, and bongos & hand drums set up right in between the two kits. You could tell right then and there it was going to be quite the night!

Kenny and Noah made good use of all sorts of percussion instruments. Both kits, hand drums, bongos, tambourine, shakers and Kenny even pulled out a hand held cowbell! Which of course ended up with some cheers on our part and lots of smiles from Kenny. He knew were were loving it. No doubt about that! I think the only thing missing from the mix was Kenny on the box! But I guess we can't be greedy, now can we!

The opener was fun, just two of the guys from the Trampolines. We were told the lead singer wasn't able to make it and so they were making due with the talents they had. But they sounded good nonetheless, especially on a great cover of Lone Justice's "Shelter".

Before we knew it, the guys were walking out looking great as always and ready to rock. And rock they did!

Setlist:
1. Only Love - including Kurt's foot stomps. Although they are much less noticeable on carpet in a loud crowded club then on a hardwood stage in a silent theater. But it still made me smile.
2. Say About Love - Sam changed up the lyrics by singing "Kenny says love is a freaky scene" Of course, any mention of Kenny and we scream again. And were met with more smiles.
3. Good Work w/Batman - always a blast. The added drums added so much to everything all night, but this one was especially rocking! There was no stopping them.
4. 617 - Strange to see Kenny playing just a tambourine, but it worked!
5. Texas Ride Song - Wow.....welcome back Kenny! I don't think I've ever jumped so hard to TRS...at that speed we'd have gotten to TX in no time! :)
6. Don't Be Lonely - Sam sans guitar and loving every minute of it. He always looks so comfortable wandering around he stage singing his heart out.
7. Idaho - Kurt gave me a fun smile when I was about to take a picture. He also said afterwards that this was a historic evening because the BoDeans Beat Barrage was there tonight. There was no doubt that it was a special occasion...and we were loving everything about it.
8. Still the Night w/Sedated - Sam again dedicated Sedated to Joey right when he was about to go into it. Then after the song, Sam said that Joey used to always come see them play and liked when they played fast. But he really liked when they played slow. And then they went into....
9. Far Far Away From My Heart - oh man, what a treat! It was absolutely beautiful, especially with Noah in back playing the bongos. It added such a great feel to the song.
10. Stay On - Lots of 'bouncing' going on both on stage and off!
11. Makes U - Eric must not have liked being so far over on the side, because he moved over to the center of the stage between the two kits and stayed there for a majority of the show, I guess the spot suits him well!
12. Brand New - Always a treat, actually, anything off of Home is a treat!
13. Fadeaway - Wow, it sounded great. There was an awesome drum solo in the middle, it was the kind of thing that just demanded your attention. There was no looking away...period. Kurt was sounding fabulous as well on that purple guitar of his. Especially on his solo, absolutely blew me away. No wonder that when the song was over Kurt let out a big sigh. Can't blame him for taking a moment to come back to reality after that!.
14. Naked w/Rickshaw Riding - When it came time for the echos, one of the BoDivas commented "we're up". And of course we never let them down! :)
15. Closer to Free - We may have heard this song more times than I can count, but for me its always been such a fun one. Especially with four up front and two drummers in back! The energy was just through the roof!
---encore---
16. You Don't Get Much - Was really hoping this would be back in the setlist w/ Kenny being back. And it rocked like never before. And what was hilarious was that is that so many times in the past year and a half, Kurt and Kenny always had this running joke about who dictated the final crash on various songs. Well this time Kenny had his arm up in the air, ready for one more final crash, and it was Noah who left Kenny hanging with his arms up in the air.
17. Good Things - Again, wow is the only way to describe it. Everybody was just "on". Simply unbelievable. Oh and more jumping. Gotta love that jumping!

When it was all said and done there was no choice but to walk out of there with a huge smile on our faces. And we smiled even more when we would remind ourselves that we were about to do it all over again the following night!
