Fox Theater - Boulder, CO
Opener: The Trampolines
Some of us overslept a bit and were having fun reliving the memories from the night before, and in the process completely forgot about the KBCO radio show. Am told that the full band was there and played Fadeaway, Nobody Loves Me and Angels. And that the big news was that they had recorded Friday night's show and were recording Saturday night's show as well but they weren't sure yet if it was going to be released or not.
After enjoying a leisurely afternoon along Pearl St. (what do you expect when you're on vacation?) We again made our way to the Fox Theater. Was very surprised at how many people turned out to stand in line on Saturday compared to Friday. But we again secured our spot up front and to the left and enjoyed another round of the Trampolines, who sounded even better the second night.
When the guys came out, we were expecting a great show similar to the night before. WRONG....there is no doubt in my mind that Saturday night was the "Best F*cking Show Ever"...period. We were even saying that half way through the show. It was just that unbelievable! I couldn't even count how many time we were blown away with everything going on up on stage. And then the setlist. My goodness. Add Do I Do w/ Will You Go Round in Circles they would have had to mop the BoDiva's up off the floor!
You could see that the guys were loving the night as much as we were. Everyone up there was having a great time and sharing lots of smiles and laughter. The energy that night was unbelievable, right through the roof and incredibly infectious. There was no containing it. And you couldn't help but feel it right from the very first song. I'm convinced it was the full moon. Or maybe the stars had aligned just right. Or maybe it was just magic. I don't know but there was something really special about Saturday night's show and we all felt it. It's definitely going to be tough show to top, and a show I won't soon forget.
Setlist:
1. Misery - Great opener! Before they started Sam mentioned that Kurt wasn't feeling the best so they were going to start out with this. It totally caught me off guard and was the first big treat of the evening! When they finished the song Kurt smiles and says, "I feel better now".
2. Ultimately Fine - OMG! I was beyond ecstatic! How did they know I was dying to hear this live again. Was it because I had already played that song about 10 times in the hotel since we got to Boulder? Was it because I absolutely love Eric's bass in it? Was it because Kenny is such a driving force with this song? Was it because a fellow bodiva threw it out to fate that "wouldn't it be cool if they played that tonight" while we were still in the hotel and listening to the song? Was it because we were looking ultimately fine? .......oh man, I was one happy girl!
3. Texas Ride Song - Just before they started Kurt yelled out "Let's keep going!" and go they did! Kenny and Noah had turned up the pace and there was nothing to do but jump! Eric's bass was turned WAY up the entire night, and oh my, tingly barely describes it! :) And when it came time for Eric's solo, Kurt just introduced him as Eric Schmeric. What can I say, it was a silly night all around! Including when Sam walked back by Kenny in the middle of the song and wiped Kenny's forehead with the towel! A few songs later and Sam looked like he could have used someone to come wipe his own forehead!
4. Don't Be Lonely - between the two drummers and Eric's bass, they must have been shaking the rafters because there was random pieces of confetti falling on the stage. While Sam was walking around & singing he was also grabbing the confetti as it fell by him.
5. Idaho - Our "yeah" was enough to make any BoDiva proud! By this time I could just feel that it was a night to remember and was already establishing itself right up there with some of the best shows I've ever been to and I made a note in my little red notebook "magic....just plain magic". And what's scary, is that it only got better from there!
6. Still the Night w/Sedated - Kurt started off by telling the story about how he wrote this song when he was a teenager but didn't quite finish it. And then Sam went in there and stole the song from him, and later came back saying "listen to this song I wrote" :) Sam also mentioned that they were recording the show that night and that this was our chance to be a rockstar. Kenny had pulled out the cowbell for this one and was sending that great smile of his our way.
7. Going Home - Another great treat! Sam started out telling the story how he was talking to Robbie Robertson about how his grandparents coming up to Wisconsin to work in the factories and that Robbie Robertson had told him, "that should be a song". As for the song, Noah had moved back to the hand drums on this one and it sounded awesome. One more sound blending in with everything else and sounding great.
8. Jenny Rae - another one I didn't expect! A little bit different version than we've heard in the past year, but it sounded great, especially with Kenny now on the hand drums and Noah calmly playing his snare and hitting the tambourine with his drumstick too! But Bukka on the other hand.....all I wrote was "wow". At some point in the middle of the song, Josh had come out to bring Sam a Becks but ended up holding up the bottle so Sam could take a drink while still playing!
9. Nobody Loves Me - In the very beginning we got a taste of 'Dancing Numi' when Kurt did some crazy move that we've only seen once or twice. Hand behind his head, elbow up, leg bent back.....almost as if he was about to do the "sprinkler" move. No matter what you call it, it was hilarious! Then you could see Kurt saying off mic "what the f*ck am I doing!!" This time it was the drummers that all I could write was "wow". Bukka though, came down from his organ in the middle of the song and picked up the tambourine! We couldn't believe it! (I made sure to compliment him on his tambourine skills when we saw him in the airport the next day!) Sam didn't let us down either, he did his now famous dance which we have dubbed the "Mexican Running Man" dance.
10. Pick Up The Pieces - YES!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!! It gives me shivers just thinking back to it!
11. Brand New - Sam said it was inspired by the drought of '89. Noah had again moved back to the bongos & hand drums and Kenny and Sam seemed to be just loving each others company, smiles all around.
12. Fadeaway - Kurt's intro on the purple guitar was extra special. I'm sure Kurt was feeling the magic of the evening and it sure showed through his playing as well. More confetti falling and the most unbelievable drum solo I think I've ever seen. Kenny and Noah started out with a great drum solo, then Kurt put down his guitar, grabbed some drum sticks and walked back to the bongos and hand drums and joined them for a little drumming fun. Ok, a lot of drumming fun! Enough to make our heads spin! So much going on we didn't know who to watch! But it didn't end there! Sam, Bukka & Eric were all standing in front of Bukka's organ while the other three were drumming away, and then Bukka started up with the tambourine again, and Eric had a shaker going..... which left Sam the only one NOT playing percussion! I guess 5 out of 6 ain't bad at all!! Definitely the biggest highlight of the entire weekend!
13. Naked - Sam mixed up the lyrics by skipping ahead a verse. Kurt just smiled and said off mic to Eric "he always does that." We were all ready to sing the echos when Kurt smiled and jokingly shook his head at us. Once we did sing the echos he laughed, turned around and put his finger to his head like a pistol - Oh come on, we're not that bad are we? :)
14. Closer To Free - So much energy, and even more fun! Kurt stepped on my notebook when I left it sitting on the edge of the stage. And we amused ourselves with that silly little number 3.
--encore #1--
15. Far Far Away From My Heart - Oh wow, just one more thing to add to the list of treats we got this weekend. It was so beautiful, so smooth. I don't know about everyone else, but I definitely got lost in the music and didn't have any intention of coming back to reality.
16. You Don't Get Much - did I ever tell you that Kenny amazes me? Well he does, and YDGM is a perfect example why. So much power, so much energy, arms going everywhere, you can barely tell what he's doing back there yet it sounds and looks amazing!
17. Good Things - Between the flying sticks and flying curls and jumping guitars, it was practically a circus up there! You couldn't help but have a big smile on your face by the time they were done! Somewhere in the middle of the song Kurt had come up to the edge of the stage and must have noticed me grabbing my notebook out of the way, because this time he just tried pushing over the beer bottles instead which were sitting on the ledge a few inches lower than the stage. What a trouble maker!
---encore #2---
18. I'm in Trouble Again w/Stolen Car - Oh wow.....I don't think I opened my eyes for more then 10 sec of the song. Sam's voice in perfect form and the crowd didn't need any help singing the Ooooh's. And then Sam goes and throws Springsteen's Stolen Car in there. It was just absolutely perfect.
19. Good Work w/Batman - As if we hadn't had enough! Whew! What a way to go out with a bang! I think by then we were all spent! Including Sam's guitar which broke a string half way through the song! Bukka was absolutely on fire on the keyboard and Kenny showed no sign of being tired....I think by then we were all running on pure adrenaline. Good Work wasn't listed on the official setlists, but I'm guessing that since it was an such an amazing night that no one wanted to end on a quiet note! And to be honest, even though Good Work in one of my favorites, up until that point I hadn't even noticed that it wasn't played earlier!
When it was all said and done, I think everyone's feet were sore from dancing so much, and I wouldn't be surprised if everyone's ears are still ringing. But I wouldn't change a single thing about the weekend. (well other than maybe catching our flight home) Everything was absolutely perfect, from the people, the place, the weather (which btw, we're taking credit for :), the music and the memories we all took home with us. You really couldn't have asked for much more, except for a few more friends who I can't wait to see next time!
