Review/Setlist

Tuesday November 21, 2006
Northern Lights Theater, Potawatomi Casino - Milwaukee, WI

It was almost a strange feeling to just finish a 3-show road trip, and then turn around and doing three more shows this week. But of course that didn't stop me! I left for Milwaukee as quick as possible after work on Tuesday and made it to the Casino just in time for doors opening. We secured our spots, and were more than happy to see Kurt, Sam and Bukka walk out just after 8. Kurt said they were going to play some acoustic stuff and then "get into the loud stuff."

Here we go:
1. Only Love - once again Kurt's T5 was sounding phenomenal just like it was all last week!
2. Makes U - with Sam whispering "beautiful" rather than "bellissimo", and me absolutely loving it....oh, and we were happy too :)
3. Me Again - Sam began by saying this was a new song and that they were working on getting a disc out in spring. Definitely a new favorite of mine!
4. Trying To Get To You (Elvis) - Kurt said after this they had one more and then they would make some noise and "if you don't like it - get a drink". The song was awesome, Sam sure has a way with that song!
5. Angels - Kurt starts with the scales again like last Saturday's show. I have to say that I absolutely love this version. It's so completely different than before that it's like a whole new song. Maybe they should consider overhauling some of the other tunes? Who knows what they'd come up with!
6. 617 - Noah and Matt Turner (who was playing bass last night) appeared out of the darkness and immediately started up with "617". Kurt switched to his purple guitar and they proceeded to make that "noise" that Kurt kept mentioning earlier.
7. Texas Ride Song - I was so ready for this...and believe me...I so needed it too! Within seconds of Noah first laying down the beats, I had lost my jacket, lost my shoes and had let my hair down....jumping is serious business, and I was bringing my A-game! And then there was the countoff at the beginning.....Kurt began with not one count-off, not two...not even three! But FOUR, count them FOUR count offs! Kurt was ready to start but Sam wasn't so he just kept repeating the count off over and over and over...and over again! :)
8. Don't Be Lonely - it looks so natural for Sam to be strolling across the stage singing his heart out. And I absolutely love the ending and how he switches the lyrics up every time just before the last couple "don't be lonely lonely lonely lonely"
9. Idaho - I swear Kurt was playing "The First Noel" at the very beginning just before going into the normal melody..
10. Still the Night w/Wanna Be Sedated - Bukka was roaming all over the stage with his accordion before everyone ended up all gathered around Noah and his drum kit. Just a fun moment thats all! When they started speeding things up at the end, I wasn't sure what Sam was planning on singing, either Sedated like he has been most of the year, or the real fast "if I could hold you tonight" like he was at the trio shows last week.
11. Far Far Away From My Heart - The song was awesome like always, and at the very end Kurt turned around towards Matt and Noah and said "that was a real pleasure playing with you on that one" - how sweet!
12. Pick Up the Pieces - and all lights on Noah. While I don't think Boulder's "Pick Up The Pieces" could EVER be topped....this was definitely rocking! Noah was sounding great back there and we were having such a good time down in front!
13. Brand New - all was going well until a little bit of a mix up in the middle. Took a bit before everyone got back on track, and then Sam says "it's a brand new arrangement!"
14. Runaway - Bukka's keyboards were turned way up and were sounding great!
15. Fadeaway - Kurt had changed up his solo in the middle and even though Sam was playing the Bed's Too Big melody and we were expecting Kurt to sing it, instead Kurt went into a different snippet by singing "Take my breath away" about 4 times through. While I know the Berlin's song by that name, I wasn't hearing the connection. So your guess is as good as mine as to exactly what it he was singing. Then later on in the song Kurt must have thought it was about time for me to get a *REALLY* close up shot of him. So he came and knelt down right in front of me and was telling me to "take it! take it! take it! take it!" Nearly took me out with his guitar in the process too! :)
16. Naked - the BoDiva's were back in action with our part and Kurt just shook his head and turned away laughing about it with Bukka and Matt. :)
17. Closer To Free - such a fun one, Bukka too seemed to be having a good time....when he wasn't playing he was tapping along on the corner of his accordion. And of course then there are the "up front" moments. This time just a 3 up front though as Matt stayed in the back. Although he definitely held his own last night, and looked like he was having a good time with it all too!
- encore - Kurt, Sam & Bukka return for one more acoustic song
18. Forever Young - Right after they had walked back out, Sam was saying that he thought this was the most comfortable he's seen people at one of their shows, in their own booths and chair dancing in the back. The song sounded great once again. Such a beautiful song....and then when they finished Noah and Matt were no where to be seen. Kurt said "they stole our rhythm section!" Sam then asked the crowd "Any dudes out there know how to play?" A moment later the guys came walking out to join in for one more tune.
19. Good Things - great fun, in the very beginning Kurt was trying to make it a funky dance party by singing "shake that thing, baby baby....shake that thing side to side..." or something along those lines. Don't know if he picked that up somewhere or if he was just making it up on the fly. But it was absolutely hilarious (and completely unexpected!) Hopefully we'll get a repeat of it sometime because I'd love to hear it again! :)

After the show, it was a long drive home and one more long day of work before we got to do it all over again.
