Fine Line Music Cafe - Minneapolis, MN
Opener: Eric Hutchinson
Soundcheck was already going on when we walked up to the doors, so we got to hear Pick Up the Pieces, Angels, Fadeaway (maybe I was hearing things again, but I swear I heard a riff or two of When The Love Is Good mixed into Fadeaway) and then they played Good Things as well. Then Sam arrived. So we then heard 617 as they finished out the soundcheck.
We amused ourselves for the next hour and a half (mostly intrigued by “Chicken & Waffles” across the street) while the line slowly grew behind us and while the opener, Eric Hutchinson, did his soundcheck which included a fun little cover of Little Red Corvette.
His opening set later on was very entertaining and had all of us laughing from his lyrics and his stage chatter. I especially liked his little ditty about "I may not be a BoDean....but you can still listen to me...they're downstairs right now rocking out to me....no actually they punched me earlier...." Great fun and I can’t believe I forgot to pick up his disc!
Before we knew it the guys were walking out on stage, took they're places and proceeded to rock like they always do.
Setlist:
1. Fadeaway - great way to started the show, Kurt's solo was awesome as ever and Sam was playing a bit of Bed's Too Big on his acoustic, but I was the only one singing it. Maybe next time I guess.
2. Texas Ride Song - with Bukka way up front, Kurt, Sam & Eric jumping in unison and Noah keeping all of us moving. Always a great time.
3. 617 I’m curious...was that Eric or an earthquake shaking the whole place?....needless to say the bass was turned way up…way past the "tingly" stage from the Boulder shows.
4. Idaho Starin’ at the world! - Love it!
5. Say About Love - still absolutely love that sliding run or whatever the hell you call it that Kurt does right in the middle of the song. A little mix up right in the middle, but according to Kyle, it's ok...he's [Sam] still learning :)
6. Good Work w/Batman - as always a lot of fun and a lot of dancing. After the song Kurt says that he's having fun and starts joking that they only let him out once in a while. And that it’s good to be out with people again. :)
7. Brand New - with more mix ups in the middle. At one point I believe Noah was suppose to slow down, but didn't causing a few confused looks and laughter among the guys, the second time though Noah got it and Sam just smiled and nodded at him. Afterwards Sam mentioned that it's always funny to see what happens when they get together after a while apart.....fun to see what kind of 'brand new' arrangements they get.
8. Still the Night w/Sedated - Kurt had some fancy footwork and ended up on his knees at the end of the song, at the same time Bukka and Eric were rocking out and having a great time in the back. Afterwards Sam introduced Noah as the hometown hero....not to mention Noah looked like he was having a blast back behind the kit all night.
9. Nobody Loves Me - as if the place wasn't hot enough....whew! Sam sure has a way with that song, not to mention Kurt’s echoes are way better than any ‘baby’ from Still the Night. Not to mention the bass probably could have been heard on the other side of town.
10. Pick Up the Pieces Based on our observations, we’ve come to the conclusion that Jill must really like this song. :) Kurt began by telling everyone to form a circle and start dance around it, and then somewhere in the middle Kurt and Sam were having a great time trading off singing “oh oh” “oh, oh” “oh, oh” “oh, oh” now that’s what I call a humdinger of a tune!
11. Makes U - with Bellissimo!
12. Misery Sam begins by pointing out to the back of the room and was calling out to someone back there, asking what’s your name man, yeah you, what’s your name? That’s when we hear someone yell back “Todd!” So Sam continues saying something along the lines of ‘having a rough night Todd? Things not going so well for you?’ And then the guys go into Misery. We were having fun singing our part, Kurt walked over to the corner of the stage then stepped out onto the only table in the front row. Soon after Kurt steps back down from the table, Sam calls out to Todd, asking again if he was having a rough night, and that just for that he should come up and sing the 2nd verse. Sam quickly starting chanting Todd’s name and soon after Todd made it up to the front row and Sam told him to “get your ass up here boy!”. Todd did a great job singing even if Sam was cueing him with the lyrics. :) No matter what, both Todd and Sam looked like they were having a great time singing together! And it just goes to show you that you never quite know what you’re going to get at a BoDeans show!
13. Runaway - aahhh....there’s a Mary in all of us!
14. Naked Sam had me completely lost in the music, but came out of it just in time to sing the echoes.
15. Closer to Free lots of fun as always, Kurt introduced (and pointed to) “MR. Noah Levy”, then did the same for “MR. Eric Holden” then pointed backward with both hands for “MR. Bukka Allen” - The four up front shots were lots of fun, even if I was too close to be able to get all of them in a single photo.
- encore -
16. Angels I’m really growing to love this new "minuet" version of Angels. Such a totally off the wall version of the song. Really makes things interesting….especially when it’s done as a full band compared to the acoustic version I hear last month.
17. Good Things lots of singing along, lots of dancing, and of course lots of smiles to go along with it all.
