Review/Setlist

Friday December 28, 2006
Fine Line Music Cafe - Minneapolis, MN
Opener: Eric Hutchinson

The next day consisted of sleeping late, a little trip to the Mall of America, an unfortunate car accident (thank goodness no one was hurt except for the bumper) and a jello shot who was out to make me choke. But it all ended well when we once again found ourselves front and center for a second night in a row.

Eric Hutchinson once again came out, welcomed us to the show and asked us to put our hands together for the opening act, Eric Hutchinson. While we’re clapping he moves over to his keyboard and began his set by introducing himself. Silly guy I tell ya! Once again he entertained us with a few jokes, a few very catchy songs and “a new song I just wrote….while I was singing the last song.” Not to mention he gave away his secret by telling us that if he’s singing a song but not really feeling it, he’ll fake the expressions to make it look like he’s really feeling the music. And once again he did a fun 1 minute preview of his album by playing & singing about 5 seconds of every song on the disc! And then ended it all with a fun cover of “My Girl” with a few of his own lyrics thrown in.

Before we knew it, the BoDeans were walking on stage, and this time, things progressed like this:

1. YDGM – The guys switched things up when Kurt turned over his shoulder in the middle of the song and told Noah to “slow down” then they proceeded into the most incredible stripped down/pulling on every heart string/harmonies that take your breath away part of the song. If it wasn’t giving you chills, I’d have to believe there was something wrong with you. Through all of it the rest of the band was in back slowly building the song back up to the all-out-rock version they began with.
2. Runaway
3. Only Love
– with our favorite foot stomps even.
4. Going Home – it’s a strange feeing, seeing a green reflection of yourself in Sam’s guitar. :)
5. Idaho – Manhattan Montana story again and Kurt describing how he needed to find a perspective….fast.
6. Texas Ride Song – Kurt told us that we couldn’t make him jump…..but he did. :)
7. Sleep – Love this one, even if Sam started out with the wrong lyrics. :)
8. Still the Night – Kurt asked for a little crowd participation, and of course we obliged. But he surprised us all when he went from playing while on his knees to playing while laying across the stage. And to make things even more silly, Kurt started shaking all over. According to him afterwards, he was possessed and that it was an exorcism. Whatever you say Kurt!
9. Stay On
10. Pick Up The Pieces
– We danced...some more then others. And we’re just grateful that no one was injured in the front row by said dancing.
11. Makes U – Sam begins by thanking Cities 97 for playing their songs…..the same songs over & over & over. :) Afterwards Sam introduced Kurt Robert Neuman….so Andy decided to try and get Sam to disclose his middle name but with no avail. “Just give me an initial!”
12. Misery – The song was sounding great and Kurt was really getting into it and after walking up to the edge of the stage….he jumped off. And continued walking out into the crowd! On the way back Sam asked “who pinched Neumi’s ass?”
Just like the night before, Sam was looking for someone feeling blue and experiencing a bit of misery….and who could also sing too. In the end in was Andy who climbed up on stage to sing the second verse. And boy did he do a great job! Really getting into in, hands on the mic and everything! Although he may be a big rock star now, I’m proud to say I knew he way back when in his “But mom! I have the f*ing hiccups!!” days. :)
Once Andy jumped down, Sam threw in “ you can kiss Andy’s ass goodbye!” Don’t think Sam believed Andy’s “misery” though, because after the song, Sam quickly pointed out that Andy was talking to three girls!
13. Fadeaway w/Bed’s Too Big – An unbelievable Kurt solo and more bass than a poor girl can handle!
14. Naked – Sam dedicated it to anyone who had ever rocked out in their room using a hairbrush or tennis racket as a microphone – Kurt pointed to himself and mouthed “me”
15. Closer To Free – four up front and smiles all around!
- encore-
16. Paradise – Kurt, Sam & Bukka came out and did a great acoustic version of this. About half way through the song, Sam picked up his guitar but instead of strumming it, he was just tapping the strings. It looked and sounded fantastic.
17. Feed The Fire w/Gimme Shelter, Slow Ride, Midnight Hour, Gloria – Kurt began by asking us “you ready for a rock opera?” If that’s what you call it Kurt, then yes, yes we were. :) All the song snippets sounded great. It was enough to make this girl very weak in the knees!
18. Good Things - a great ending to a great night!
