Fine Line Music Cafe - Minneapolis, MN
Opener: Billy Johnson
As the third day came upon us, our excitement only grew as more family members made the trek into Minny. After a leisurely afternoon watching our memories DVD with martinis in hand, we once again made our way over to the Fine Line.
Despite the cold rain, the two hours in line passed relatively quickly with such good company and "Chicken & Waffles" being mentioned a meer dozen or so times. We secured our front row spots once again and awaited the start of the show. Before we knew it, the staff was blocking traffic in front of the stage door, and the guys came out with nothing but smiles once again.
Setlist:
1. YDGM - such a moving performance once again. I've always been torn between the shear power of the rocking version (Homebrewed), and the absolute beauty of the acoustic version (JDC). But this is the perfect mix of both. By far my favorite version…ever.
2. Runaway
3. Good Work Love that driving guitar. Although I must say, it’s owner was in a pretty silly mood that night. While Bukka was turned to the side playing his solo, Kurt walked up behind him and started playing on the other keyboard. Bukka was quite surprised when he finally realized that Kurt was right behind him. And to top it all off, the song ended with Kurt, Eric & Sam jumping in unison.
4. Sleep w/Dreams (Fleetwood Mac) wow…loved that Sam threw that song snippet in there! It fit perfectly.
5. Idaho
6. Texas Ride Song I didn’t know Dr. Seuss was at the show!....Kurt informed us that “I will not jump on this song…Kurt I am” And then went into a long rhyming spiel before ending with something along the lines of “I will not, could not….well, unless you’re encouraging me to jump”
Later on when we’re all jumping, Kurt just told us “no, don’t jump!” and as Eric was about to go into his big solo, Kurt informed us that “this is Eric…he thinks he can make me jump with his bass licks!” Kurt was then pretending as if one by one his legs were trying to jump. Guess he couldn’t quite control them because he ended up jumping along with the rest of us. Although he blamed us saying “I didn’t want to do it, but you made me do it!”
7. True Devotion
8. Still The Night w/Wanna Be Sedated Kurt informed us that “this song requires song participation…so you have to yell out shit” When they made their way into Sedated, Kurt must have decided to see how long the guys could last at that insane speed, because he just kept going and going and going and waited until the last final second to signal the ending. Noah was going nuts back behind the kit, so it was no wonder that afterward he stood up and had to shake out his arm!
9. Pick Up The Pieces no break for Noah I guess, because they went right into this! Somewhere in the middle while we were all dancing like crazy, Kurt started doing that jig of his, including slapping each foot with the opposite hand and then finished it out with his “pelican pose” as we’ve dubbed it. Of course laughter all around with antics such as those!
10. Makes U Sam introduced Kurt: “Mr. Kurt Robert Neumann, Sir!” Kurt replies “thank you Sir.”
11. Misery Kurt was having WAY too much fun with this. At one point he was heading for center stage right towards me, then jumped down into the crowd and just kept walking. Based off of his return to the stage, I’d say Sam has a new ‘biggest fan’ since Kurt was yelling for him the whole way back to the stage “Sam! You’re my favorite Sam! I love you Sam! I want to have your babies!” Then, instead of stepping back up on stage (it’s only about 3 feet high), Kurt ROLLED on to the stage and laid there flailing around a bit as he tried to roll over and get back up. Everyone was of course laughing hysterically at all of this and Sam just says between laughs “Neumi, stop!”
When Kurt finally stood back up, Sam turned to the crowd in search of someone to sing the verse again as he had the two previous nights. After many attempts to get someone, anyone on stage to sing, a women climbs up there and did a great job singing. Her and Sam sang all the way through the end of the song where she put a great spin on the crowd’s echo of “misery”.
12. Wild World now there’s a surprise! Nice to hear again though! Although Kurt had a little difficulty with the lyrics but recovered nicely. :)
13. Fadeaway w/Bed’s Too Big Wow is about all you can say about the big solo in the middle. Amazing that those five guys could creat such a wall of sound. And of course we loved it!
14. Naked wow, guess now we know: any love is good love…err, I mean memo,…yeah, any memo is a good memo!
15. Closer to Free everyone was pushing Eric around …or maybe it was the other way around? :)
- encore -
16. Far Far Away From My Heart Bukka walked back out first before anyone else and we joked that we were going to get a Bukka solo! But alas, Far Far Away will do too. They were thanking us for coming and hoped we had a good time. [we cheer] then Kurt pipes in “except for me….I had a REALLY good time.” The song itself was quite the treat to hear.
17. Feed The Fire w/Gimme Shelter, Slow Ride, Midnight Hour, Gloria Sam took his time introducing Kurt as “Kurt Robert Neumann singing guitar player.com/gigabyte” :)
18. Good Things
What a fun show, made even better by the great company up front. I’ve really come to love the Fine Line, tiny stage & so low you feel like your right there, or maybe the guys feel like they’re in the crowd, or at least close enough to literally venture into the crowd. :) No matter what, it’s such an intimate rocking venue that you can’t help but love it!
