Northern Lights Theater, Potawatomi Casino - Milwaukee, WI
It's been so much fun getting caught up in all this buzz about the new disc and all these radio dates. And that buzz just made last night's show that much more fun.
Despite being in the balcony and sitting for most of the show, we still had a good time and really enjoyed the new material that made it's way into the setlist. And I have to say, if there is ever a time to be in the balcony, this is the place because the lighting at the Northern Lights Theater is fantastic. But I think that's pretty apparent by my photos from both last night and from Nov. '06.
Anyway, the guys took the stage just after 8pm and the rest went a little something like this:
1. Ultimately Fine - Kurt started it out with a fantastic guitar intro before the rest of the band joined in. And well, of course the song rocked. It always rocks.
2. Angels
3. Idaho - including a brief version of the Manhattan MO story.
4. Good Work - honky tonk style yet again, and just a bit of Batman mixed in the middle as well. Bukka as always was working the keys like we all know he can and I was enjoying the fact that I could actually see his fingers in action from where we were sitting. And then there's Kurt who after urging us to clap along exclaimed..."Can I get a witness!!"
5. Texas Ride Song - I jumped. :) ....and spilt my beer in the process :( But all was well again once Eric Schmeric got us going with that bass solo of his.
6. First Time - Sam begins to explain that the new cd is coming out in march and that this is a new one. Then adds "Some of you might know it". Then just as they were about to begin playing, Kurt pipes in with "What's it about? What do you mean by "first time" :) Kurt's silliness continued after the song when someone down in front called out to the guys. Kurt replies with "what was that?...Were you talking to Sam?...Am I butting in?". Although I admit the whole thing was probably funnier to us due to a perfectly timed comment from someone in our group just before Kurt stared with his silliness.
7. Naked - solo or not to solo...that is the question. :)
8. Waste a Lifetime w/Rebel Rebel (David Bowie) - First of all, the song was fantastic. The lyrics really strike a cord with me and I can't help but get wrapped up in it all. And then Sam has to go and throw a bunch of Rebel Rebel at the end! Too fun indeed! But I must say it seemed to fit perfectly, although by the guys' expressions it was hard to tell whether they planned that or not. Either way it ended up being a pretty big highlight of the evening for us! Afterwards Kurt explained that "that was a song off the new record.....minus the David Bowie part."
In between songs, Kurt once again goes into some silly little ditty about the cold weather. I couldn't quite hear what he was singing, but it had something to do with it being really cold outside and then he calls out to us to "Sing along!!" Too funny indeed!
9. Still the Night w/Hey Pretty Girl - yup...you heard me right! Sedated was replaced by Hey Pretty Girl! This seemed an even bigger surprised based on a Blend conversation that our group had at the bar earlier in the evening. Either way it made my night!
10. Far Far Away From My Heart
11. Fadeaway - I've had the pleasure of seeing/hearing Fadeaway live lots of times, but I think it's safe to say that this one is way up there on the list. Kurt and Eric worked that solo like no other. I'm drawing a blank as to how to adequately describe what they were doing, but I think this time "wow" does it. Well, maybe more like what I wrote in my notebook...."wow, wow, wow, wow, WOW!" yup...that does it. :)
12. Closer to Free
- encore -
13. Everyday - I must say I am really falling in love with this song. It's simply fantastic especially with the full band. I know that sometimes the guys' vocals get a bit lost when they're in a full band setting, but I personally think that on this song, the band just intensifies Kurt & Sam's harmonies so much more.
14. 617
15. Good Things
